Simple Present Tense Overview

The simple present tense is used to talk about habitual actions, routines, general truths, and facts. In Business English, it’s essential to express actions that happen regularly or things that are generally true.

1.1. Verb “To Be” in Simple Present
  • The verb "to be" has three forms in the simple present: am, is, and are.

Subject+ Verb "To Be" (Simple Present)

Example Sentence

I am a manager.

He/She/It is He is on a call.

We/You/They are busy today.

Affirmative:

  • I am a project manager.

  • She is an accountant.

  • They are in the office.

Negative:

  • I am not a project manager.

  • She is not an accountant.

  • They are not in the office.

Questions:

  • Am I on the right team?

  • Is she in the meeting?

  • Are they coming to the event?

1.2. Other Verbs in Simple Present

For other verbs, the rule is simple: use the base form of the verb. For the third person singular (he, she, it), add -s or -es to the verb.

Affirmative:

  • I schedule meetings every day.

  • He manages the team.

  • We collaborate with international clients.

  • He does not (doesn’t) manage the team.

  • They do not (don’t) work on weekends.

Questions:

  • Do I need to attend the meeting?
